American Folk Garden Quilt Patterns

"This unique quilt is one my mother has had in her collection of antiques since the late 1940’s.  It was originally made circa 1875 and is most likely of Pennsylvania-German origin.

The variations in the design indicate that these were original and not folded pattern pieces.  The original quilts have large blocks, 17 ½ ² x 17 ½², set without sashing, border or binding.  The quilt edges were built inward then slip stitch in place.  Cotton batting was used.

The quilt is simple but bold in design.  The colors are limited, green and red with touches of blue and yellow.  All of the fabrics in the original quilt are solids.  Each block is outlined quilted with one row of stitching.  There are 30 different blocks in all.

This is a wonderful quilt to do in the original color and style, but it also adapts well to modern colors.  If your style is more contemporary, these bold designs look terrific on dark backgrounds with bold greens and brilliant flowers.  Using hand dyed mottle fabric best keeps to the spirit of the quilts.  The flower center can be embellished with threads and beads to make the quilt a personal expression of your own.
